Asks

  • Police to receive Care Experienced Awareness training (Police officers could be provided specific training around what it is like to be care experienced, in addition to trauma informed training)
  • Police to provide Awareness training for young people (For the young people to gain a better understanding of the role of the police and the issues/barriers and stigma faced by Police officers)
  • Build more positive relationships between police and young people (Police officers and young people should be afforded more time together engaging in fun type activities as a way of getting to know each other better as people. This would hopefully breakdown barriers between police and young people and help make attitudes more positive)
  • Police officers to be invited to take part of our YISS summer programme.
  • Rights training for young people (Police to support young people to have more understanding and knowledge of their rights. This may help reduce issues between police and young people created by misunderstandings and misinterpretations)

What we have achieved

  • Police and care experienced young people to be encouraged to explore further ways of working together with the intention of breaking down barriers and improving positive relationships.
  • We would like to invite Police officers to complete an adapted version of our questionnaire to gain their views on their interactions with care experienced young people.
  • Police officers are coming along to some of the YISS summer programme activities as a means of relationship building.
